Een nacht om nooit te vergeten. Maria Callas, de onvergetelijke diva en het gezicht van de opera in de 20e eeuw, maakte haar debuut in Parijs. Slechts één avond vormde de weelderige Parijse Opéra het decor voor deze legendarische voorstelling op 19 december 1958. Het grote sociale evenement werd bijgewoond door “Le Tout Paris”, waaronder de Franse president Coty, Jean Cocteau, de hertog en hertogin van Windsor, Charlie Chaplin en Brigitte Bardot. Callas verscheen op het beroemde podium met haar meest elegante couture en juwelen ter waarde van een miljoen dollar.

Ze opende met haar kenmerkende rol, Norma’s ‘Casta diva’, gevolgd door het beklemmende ‘Miserere’ uit Verdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’ om daarna de stemming te verlichten met het ondeugende ‘Una voce poco fa’ uit ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’. Het hoogtepunt van de avond kwam in de tweede helft: een volledig opgevoerde realisatie van ‘Tosca, Act II’. Het repertoire in deze voorstelling toont Callas op haar best, zowel in recital als als opera-actrice. Visuele elementen waren net zo belangrijk als de vocale dimensies in haar kunst.

Une soirée inoubliable. Maria Callas, la quintessence de la diva et le visage de l’opéra au XXe siècle, a fait ses débuts à Paris avec cette représentation iconique à l’Opéra de Paris le 19 décembre 1958, pour un soir seulement.

Il s’agissait d’un événement mondain majeur, auquel assistait le “Tout-Paris” (dont le président Coty, Jean Cocteau, le duc et la duchesse de Windsor, Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot, et bien d’autres). Callas est apparue sur la célèbre scène vêtue de ses vêtements les plus élégants et des bijoux d’une valeur d’un million de dollars. Le répertoire de ce spectacle montre Callas à son meilleur niveau, tant en récital qu’en tant qu’actrice. Les éléments visuels étaient aussi importants que les dimensions vocales dans son art.

Diffusée pour la première fois entièrement en couleurs et en 4K - méticuleusement restaurée à partir des bobines 16 mm originales récemment découvertes et d’une source sonore nouvellement découverte – cette soirée légendaire est à vivre comme jamais auparavant.

A night to remember. Maria Callas, the quintessential diva and the face of the opera in the 20th century, made her Paris debut with this legendary performance at the sumptuous Paris Opéra on December 19th, 1958, for one night only.

It was a major social event, attended by “Le Tout Paris” (including French President Coty, Jean Cocteau, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Charlie Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot, and many more). Callas appeared on the famous stage wearing her most elegant couture and a million dollars’ worth of jewelry. She opened with her signature role, Norma’s “Casta diva”, followed by the haunting “Miserere” scene from Verdi’s Il Trovatore, before she lightened the mood with the mischievous “Una voce poco fa” from Il Barbiere di Siviglia. The climax of the evening came in the second half: a fully staged performance of Tosca, Act II.

The repertoire in this performance shows Callas at her best, both in recital and as an operatic actress. Visual elements were as important as the vocal dimensions in her art.
