Bijna twintig jaar na zijn regiedebuut neemt acteur Edward Norton opnieuw in de regisseursstoel plaats voor de adaptatie van ‘Motherless Brooklyn’, de meesterlijke roman van Jonathan Lethem over een privédetective uit New York die de moord op zijn baas onderzoekt.

Norton, die ook het scenario geschreven heeft, verplaatst de actie van de jaren ‘90 naar de fifties. Zo kan hij ‘Motherless Brooklyn’ onbeschroomd omvormen tot een ode aan de klassieke film noir. Maar ook omdat hij zo de bijzonder rücksichtslose urbanistische transformatie van The Big Apple in dat decennium kan bekritiseren. ‘Motherless Brooklyn’ lijkt daardoor de New Yorkse pendant van het in L.A. gesitueerde ‘Chinatown’. Oké, misschien geen even grote klassieker in wording, maar zeker een spannende trip door de achterafstraatjes - letterlijk en figuurlijk - van een New York dat uit een schilderij van Edward Hopper getuimeld is.
