Walter Arfeuille heeft alles van een tragische held. Heel zijn leven lang wil hij de sterkste en de strafste zijn. Hij doet er dan ook alles aan om zijn grote rivaal te verslaan, krachtpatser John Massis, die in Vlaanderen geboekstaafd staat als ‘de sterkste mens’. Zijn obsessie drijft hem tot het uiterste: het is nooit groot, zwaar of sensationeel genoeg. Het bezorgt hem de bijnaam ‘het beest’, maar brengt hem ook bijna ten onder. De gevallen held kruipt langzaam terug recht, met een fonkeling in de ogen onthult hij zijn nieuwe plannen. Een intiem portret van een sterk karakter.
