Uit de donkere zolder van de filmgeschiedenis haalt Kuru voor de tiende Cult Night het onschatbaar invloedrijke ‘Blood and Black Lace’. Regisseur Mario Bava’s vroege mijlpaal uit het giallo-genre is sindsdien vaak geïmiteerd, maar zelden geëvenaard. Pionier, trendsetter, de Italiaanse Hitchcock, Maestro van het Macabere…, Bava verdient elk van zijn vele eretitels. Na de zwart-witklassiekers ‘Black Sunday’ (door Kuru vertoond in 2016) en ‘The Girl Who Knew Too Much’ wist hij begin de jaren ‘60 als geen ander voor - en na - hem het mysterie en de erotiek uit populaire pulpromannetjes te verweven met thriller-elementen tot het perfecte huwelijk tussen hoge en lage kunst. Giallo was geboren! Van de elegante setting (een modehuis) en de gemaskerde seriemoordenaar tot de visuele vindingrijkheid en het gefetisjeerde geweld (hier jegens de modellen), alles is al aanwezig in deze bloedrode blauwdruk.

Decennialang al siert ‘Blood and Black Lace’ menig lijst van beste én meest stijlvolle horror- en thrillerfilms aller tijden. Wiens oogballen niet gaan smelten bij de ervaring van Mario Bava’s expressieve kleurenpalet, boekt best een bezoekje aan de opticien - net als zij bij wie dat wel gebeurt, natuurlijk, waarvoor we geen verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Beroemde adepten als Dario Argento, Pedro Almodóvar en Martin Scorsese lieten zich lustig inspireren door, onder meer, de lugubere badscène. Visueel even verfijnd als het duurste kant en tegelijk verontrustend pervers van A tot Z, geldt Bava’s haute couture toetssteen ook als verknipte voorloper van het slasher-genre. Digitaal gerestaureerd in 4K, grijpt de fluwelen handschoen van de Italiaanse grootmeester uit de genrecinema als nooit tevoren naar de keel. Bava boven!

Director Mario Bava’s early landmark of the giallo genre has since been often imitated, but rarely equalled. Pioneer, trendsetter, the Italian Hitchcock, Maestro of the Macabre…, Bava deserves each of his many honorary titles. After the black-and-white classics ‘Black Sunday’ (screened by Kuru in 2016) and ‘The Girl Who Knew Too Much’, like no other before - and after - him Bava in the early 1960s knew how to weave the mystery and eroticism from popular pulp novels with thriller elements into a perfect marriage of high and low art. Giallo was born! From the elegant setting (a fashion house) and the masked serial killer to the visual ingenuity and fetishised violence (here towards the models), everything is already present in this blood-red blueprint.

For decades now, ‘Blood and Black Lace’ has graced many a list of the best and most stylish horror and thriller films of all time. Those whose eyeballs do not melt from experiencing Mario Bava’s expressive colour palette should book a visit to the optician - just like those who do, of course, for which we take no responsibility. Famous adepts like Dario Argento, Pedro Almodóvar and Martin Scorsese lustily drew inspiration from, for instance, the lurid bath scene. Visually as sophisticated as the most expensive lace and at the same time disturbingly perverse from A to Z, Bava’s haute couture touchstone also counts as a twisted precursor to the slasher genre. Digitally restored in 4K, the velvet glove of Italian genre cinema’s grandmaster grabs you by the throat like never before. Bava above all!
