“Reality isn’t what it used to be”
Hoe leuk de Nieuw-Zeelandse acteur Sam Neill ook is als de norse Dr. Grant in de familievriendelijke ‘Jurassic Park’-films, des te verrassender zijn z’n geflipte bijdragen aan het horrorgenre. Naast ‘Possession’ en ‘Event Horizon’ (door Kuru vertoond in 2019) bewijst ‘In the Mouth of Madness’ hoe gestóórd goed hij is in het neerzetten van nuchtere personages die langzaamaan uitmonden in waanzin.
In deze krankzinnige hommage aan de vader van de kosmische horror, H.P. Lovecraft, speelt Neill de verzekeringsinspecteur John Trent, ingehuurd om de vermiste schrijver Sutter Cane op te speuren samen met het manuscript van zijn laatste boek. Het verhaal daarvan zou lezers letterlijk gek maken! Hoewel de sceptische Trent een publiciteitsstunt ruikt, leidt het spoor van de razend populaire auteur, gemodelleerd naar Stephen King, naar een plaats die op geen enkele kaart staat, recht uit de boeken van Cane… “Reality isn’t what it used to be”, klinkt het. Dolletjes!
Cane noch King zat achter het losgeslagen scenario van ‘In the Mouth of Madness’, dat ene Michael De Luca pende en produceerde tussenin ‘Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare’ en ‘Judge Dredd’. Belangrijker is dat de film geldt als het derde luik in wat John Carpenter zijn Apocalypse-trilogie noemt, na ‘The Thing’ en ‘Prince of Darkness’. Ondanks een Carpenter in bloedvorm, werd deze bovennatuurlijke huivertrip destijds doorverwezen naar het verdomhoekje. Maar laat dat nu net de broedplaats zijn waaruit menig grootse cultfilm wordt geboren!

As fun as New Zealand actor Sam Neill is as the grumpy Dr. Grant in the family-friendly ‘Jurassic Park’ movies, all the more surprising are his insane contributions to the horror genre. Alongside ‘Possession’ and ‘Event Horizon’ (screened by Kuru in 2019), ‘In the Mouth of Madness’ proves how crazy good he is at portraying down-to-earth characters that slowly spiral into madness.
In this bonkers homage to the father of cosmic horror, H.P. Lovecraft, Neill plays insurance investigator John Trent, hired to track down the missing writer Sutter Cane along with the manuscript of his latest book. The story of the book is said to drive readers mad, literally! Though the skeptical Trent smells a publicity stunt, the trail of the wildly popular author, modeled after Stephen King, leads to a place not found on any map, straight out of Cane’s books… “Reality isn’t what it used to be”, as one character notes. Cray cray!
Neither Cane nor King was behind the unhinged screenplay of ‘In the Mouth of Madness’, which one Michael De Luca penned and produced in between ‘Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare’ and ‘Judge Dredd’. More importantly, the film is the third installment in what John Carpenter calls his Apocalypse trilogy, after ‘The Thing’ and ‘Prince of Darkness’. Despite Carpenter being in top shape, this supernatural thrill was initially relegated to the doghouse. But as it happens, that’s the breeding ground from which many great cult films are born!
