“Forget the insecticide, bring on the nukes!”
In de verre toekomst dreigt een buitenaardse invasie van uit de kluiten gewassen insecten, bijgenaamd ‘bugs’, de mensheid genadeloos te verpletteren - o, ironie. Vers bloed of gedoodverfd kanonnenvlees, voorbeeldige rekruut Johnny Rico en zijn even geprivilegieerde, opvallend Arisch ogende vriendjes zijn erop gebrand (lees: gehersenspoeld) om hun ruimtesteentje bij te dragen aan de interstellaire oorlog.
De ideologie van het boek waarop ‘Starship Troopers’ gebaseerd is, degouteerde regisseur Paul Verhoeven zodanig dat hij het na twee hoofdstukken voor bekeken hield. Het blijft een raadsel hoe pers en publiek deze hypersatirische en (op politiek vlak) quasi profetische cultklassieker van formaat aanvankelijk aanzagen als een verheerlijking van fascisme, militarisme, patriottisme en andere rechtse -ismen. Terwijl het daar net een astronomische middelvinger naar opsteekt! Misschien lag het eraan dat de Hollandse pulpmeester zijn subversieve visie openlijk inspireerde op nazipropaganda en zijn fotogenieke snoeten (Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards) rekruteerde uit het tv-tienerdrama ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’. Het hielp vast niet dat zijn sloganeske scifispektakel evenveel lak heeft aan menselijke empathie als aan natuurwetten.
Wat ‘Starship Troopers’ wel telt, zijn tientallen liters nepbloed, honderden monsters, meer dan duizend figuranten (waarvan het gros sneuvelt op het scherm) en de grootste hoeveelheid munitie tot dan toe gebruikt in een filmproductie. De helft van het budget ging naar de visuele effecten, goed voor een Oscarnominatie. Maar laat het aan conservatieve Amerikanen om vooral aanstoot te nemen aan een douchescène, eerder dan aan al dat ultrageweld… Door machtswissels aan het hoofd van de Hollywoodstudio’s profiteerde Verhoeven, provocateur pur sang, van een ongeziene vrijheid om na ‘RoboCop’ (1987) en ‘Total Recall’ (1990) zijn onofficieel drieluik van actie-sciencefictionvehikels ambitieus af te ronden. Wij tekenen alvast blindelings voor volle glorie aan het front van de bioscoopzaal. “I’m doing my part!” Doe jij het jouwe?

The ideology of the book on which ‘Starship Troopers’ is based, disgusted director Paul Verhoeven to such an extent that he gave up after two chapters. It remains a mystery how the press and public initially saw this hyper-satirical and (politically speaking) quasi-prophetic cult classic as a glorification of fascism, militarism, patriotism and other right-wing -isms. Instead, it gives it an astronomical middle finger! Perhaps it was because the Dutch pulp master openly inspired his subversive vision on Nazi propaganda and recruited his photogenic faces (Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards) from the TV teen drama ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’. It probably didn’t help that his slogan-like sci-fi spectacle has as much regard for human empathy as it does for natural laws.
What ‘Starship Troopers’ does boast, are dozens of liters of fake blood, hundreds of monsters, more than a thousand extras (most of whom perish on screen) and up till then the largest amount of ammunition used in a film production. Half the budget went to the visual effects, good for an Oscar nomination. But leave it to conservative Americans to take particular offense to one shower scene, rather than all that ultra-violence. Due to changes in power at the head of the Hollywood studios, Verhoeven, provocateur par excellence, took advantage of an unprecedented freedom to ambitiously complete his unofficial triptych of action-science-fiction vehicles after ‘RoboCop’ (1987) and ‘Total Recall’ (1990). We’re already blindly signing up for full glory at the front of the cinema hall. “I’m doing my part!” Are you doing yours?
