In de winter van 1862, tijdens de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog, maar ver weg van het front, verkent een compagnie blauwbloezen onbekend gebied in het Westen van Amerika. Hier voelt oorlog niet gevaarlijk of spannend, maar hongerig en monotoon. Terwijl deze mannen van allerlei achtergronden hun kamp opzetten, baseball spelen en afwachten, mijmeren ze over God en het leven. Wanneer de vijand eindelijk toeslaat, blijkt de woeste natuur van Montana minstens even dodelijk.
