Bij een ontploffing in het Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York verliest de 13-jarige Theo zijn moeder. Verward, te midden van het puin, de chaos en de vernieling, brengt iets hem er toe om op dat moment een schilderij van onschatbare waarde te stelen: ‘The Goldfinch’ (‘Het Puttertje’).

Toute sa vie, Theo est hanté par des souvenirs de son enfance.
