Voor de eerste Cult Night van het jaar zet Kuru gretig de tanden in een van de eighties’ ultieme creaties: ‘The Lost Boys’, vernoemd naar de volgelingen van Peter Pan die nooit opgroeien. Het verhaal volgt de jonge broers Michael en Sam die met hun gescheiden moeder verhuizen naar het fictieve kustplaatsje Santa Carla onder de Californische zon. Wanneer die is ondergegaan, komt Michael (Jason Patric) via zijn nieuwe hartendief Star (Jami Gertz) in contact met de bleke, blonde David (Kiefer Sutherland) en diens beruchte motorbende. “Vampiers!”, wordt zijn broertje Sam gewaarschuwd door een duo zelfverklaarde vampierenjagers in de lokale stripboekwinkel, gewapend met comic books als handleidingen. Kan Michael weerstaan aan de verleiding om zich aan te sluiten bij de ondersteboven-hangjongeren? “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.”
Bloed zuigen en feromonen zweten, lang voor het gefonkel van Team Edward versus Team Jacob zette de horror teensploitation van ‘The Lost Boys’ de toon voor een aanlokkelijke verjonging onder eeuwenoud gefladder in de cinema. Als popfenomeen transformeerde het onder meer The Two Coreys (Feldman en Haim) tot tieneridolen. Wie beter dan Joel Schumacher, de flamboyante genre-excentriekeling die later Batman rubberen tepels zou geven, om onze geliefde schepsels van de nacht zonder veel sérieux weer sexy te maken. Schumacher had ongegeneerd lak aan subtiliteit en dompelde traditionele gothic romantiek in een bad van glamoureuze MTV-esthetiek, in hetzelfde jaar dat zijn cameraman Michael Chapman ook de iconische muziekvideo voor Michael Jacksons ‘Bad’ inblikte. Laat je haar groeien tot een nektapijt en besproei jezelf met geparfumeerd wijwater. ‘The Lost Boys’ is cult canon voor zij die zweren bij knoflook en houten staken.

For the first Cult Night of the year, Kuru eagerly cut its teeth on one of the eighties’ ultimate creations: ‘The Lost Boys’, named after the followers of Peter Pan who never grow up. The story follows young brothers Michael and Sam who move with their divorced mother to the fictional coastal town of Santa Carla under the Californian sun. When that has set, Michael (Jason Patric), through his new heartthrob Star (Jami Gertz), comes into contact with pale, blonde David (Kiefer Sutherland) and his notorious biker gang . “Vampires!”, his little brother Sam is warned by a duo of self-proclaimed vampire hunters in the local comic book shop, armed with comic books as manuals. Can Michael resist the temptation to join the upside-down hangouts? “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.”
Sucking blood and sweating pheromones, long before the sparkle of Team Edward versus Team Jacob, the horror teensploitation of ‘The Lost Boys’ set the tone for an inviting rejuvenation among age-old flutterings in cinema. As a pop phenomenon, it transformed the likes of The Two Coreys (Feldman and Haim) into teen idols. Who better than Joel Schumacher, the flamboyant genre eccentric who would go on to give Batman rubber nipples, to make our beloved creatures of the night sexy again without much sérieux. Schumacher unabashedly disregarded subtlety, dipping traditional gothic romance into a bath of glamorous MTV aesthetics, in the same year that his cameraman Michael Chapman also canned the iconic music video for Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’. Grow your hair into a mullet and spray yourself with scented holy water. ‘The Lost Boys’ is cult canon for those who swear by garlic and wooden stakes.
