Het Italiaans Cineforum is een jaarlijks terugkerende filmreeks die loopt van januari tot april i.s.m. met socio-culturele organisatie Il Caffè. Eén vrijdag per maand vertonen we een Italiaanse kwaliteitsfilm, telkens een (hedendaagse) klassieker (Nederlands ondertiteld), en met een inleiding in het Italiaans door Professor Mara Santi.

In Medea – een freudiaans-marxistische bewerking van de Griekse tragedie van Euripides – schetst de Italiaanse filmregisseur, dichter, schrijver en marxist Pier Paolo Pasolini een grimmig beeld van een wereld die zowel gevoelig als meedogenloos is. Operazangeres Maria Callas schittert in de hoofdrol als Medea, haar enige filmrol ooit.
Het eerste deel van MEDEA volgt Jason en de Argonauten tijdens hun zoektocht naar het Gulden Vlies. Jason krijgt hulp van Medea, die daarmee haar eigen volk verraadt. In het tweede deel is Medea met Jason naar Griekenland vertrokken, waar hij haar echter in de steek laat voor de dochter van de koning van Korinthe. Medea neemt op gruwelijke wijze wraak.

Médée la magicienne, fille du roi de Colchide, voit arriver sur sa terre le prince Jason venu enlever la Toison d’Or, l’idole de son peuple. Tombée folle amoureuse du jeune Grec, elle trahit sa famille et son pays en dérobant pour lui la Toison d’Or et s’exile à ses côtés. Des années plus tard, alors qu’elle lui a donné deux enfants, l’homme pour qui elle a tout abandonné se détourne d’elle pour une femme plus jeune…

Pasolini electrifies the myth of Medea with a mixture of ritual theatre and social anthropology. Maria Callas is riveting in the title role as the deranged sorceress. Under Pasolini’s direction, the plight of colonised cultures is symbolised by Medea as she surrenders to the foreign intruder, betrays the secrets of her people and, in doing so, is driven to madness and murder.

Medea centres on the barbarian protagonist as she finds her position in the Greek world threatened, and the revenge she takes against her husband Jason who has betrayed her for another woman. A mythical tale of love, betrayal and revenge, MEDEA is a fascinating collision of Freudian and Marxist themes from Italy’s most controversial director. Pasolini’s disturbing vision of personal and national conflicts stars Maria Callas in the title role, offering an extraordinary performance as the high priestess Medea. A vivid and aesthetically challenging vision, Medea is a complex blend of classical mythology and contemporary social criticism.
