STUDIO SKOOP CLASSICS: CHARLIE CHAPLIN RESTORED
Schrijver, regisseur, componist, acteur, komiek,.. Charlie Chaplin was de eerste globale wereldster na Jezus van Nazareth dankzij zijn personage ‘The Little Tramp’, waarmee hij tientallen films maakte. Vorig jaar werd zijn meesterwerk ‘The Kid’ 100 jaar. Hoog tijd om enkele van zijn meest memorabele films terug op het witte doek te halen in digitaal gerestaureerde versies. In het komende filmseizoen 2022-2023 mag u zich dus verwachten aan een maandelijkse dosis Charlie Chaplin.
De kleine zwerver hangt rond bij het circus waar de politie hem aanziet voor een zakkenroller. Ongewild wordt hij de hoofdact van de show. De circuseigenaar neemt hem aan als clown maar eigenlijk heeft hij alleen maar oog voor zijn dochter.
THE CIRCUS is een film met de bekende ingrediënten die Chaplins film zo succesvol en geliefd maakten : de zwerver met het gouden hart die tegen wil en dank op het verkeerde moment op de verkeerde plek terecht komt… maar eindigt met het meisje én het geluk aan zijn zijde. De film leverde Charlie Chaplin een Academy Award op.

Cette pure merveille porte à incandescence l’art du grand Charlie Chaplin, et fait partie de ses chefsd’oeuvre absolus. Le génial acteur et réalisateur y met à l’épreuve le potentiel comique de l’univers du cirque, sur les traces de son personnage fétiche de vagabond, se réfugiant sous la tente pour échapper à la police. Les gags pleuvent, souvent acrobatiques et toujours fignolés avec la précision dont Chaplin était seul capable. Un pur régal pour jeunes et moins jeunes spectateurs !

Wrongfully accused of criminal acts, a tramp (Charlie Chaplin) unwittingly ducks into a big top, where his bumbling attempts to avoid pursuing police officers earn the laughter and applause of the circus-goers. Impressed, the ringmaster (Allan Garcia) decides to employ the tramp as an entertainer. In between getting trapped in a lion’s cage and partaking in clumsy high wire escapades, he falls for a beautiful show rider (Merna Kennedy), who unfortunately has eyes for a daring tightrope acrobat.
