Een gezin (2 ouders en 3 kinderen) in de 89ste dag van een post-apocalyptische wereld. De mensheid staat op de rand van extinctie. We zien hoe het vijftal zich muisstil voortbeweegt op zoek naar voedsel. Het is al heel snel (pijnlijk) duidelijk dat geluid gelijk staat aan gevaar. Het gezin heeft één groot voordeel: het oudste kind is doof en ze kunnen allen communiceren in gebarentaal. Echter, de zwangerschap van de moeder bengelt als een zwaard van Damocles boven hun hoofden.
Deze zenuwslopende thriller is een ware aanval op de zintuigen. Krasinski speelt op magistrale wijze met de anticipatie van het publiek, en laat je achter met een voldaan en high gevoel, zoals goeie films dat plegen te doen.
