“Snakes on a boat!”
Met ‘Anaconda’ (1997) stellen we in onze 2de Kuru Cult Night van 2024 een creature feature voor, een horror subgenre dat z’n hoogtepunt kende met ‘Jaws’ (1975) en in de jaren ’90 een opmerkelijke revival beleefde met o.a. ‘Deep Blue Sea’ (1999), ‘Lake Placid’ (1999) en ‘The Relic’ (1998). Deze keer echter geen overgrote haai, krokodil of cryptid te bespeuren. Een gigantische wurgslang, type anaconda, is hier natuurlijk het prijsbeest!
Zowel personages als het plot worden in ‘Anaconda’ versmacht. Een Amerikaanse opnamecrew trekt met een rivierboot langs de Amazone, op zoek naar een verborgen inheems volk — en dan komt hun boot vast te zitten… De hoofdrollen van deze nietsvermoedende westerlingen op ‘exotische’ plekken gingen naar bekenden uit de music biz die zich toen aan de movie biz waagden: Ice Cube (van hiphopgroep N.W.A.) en popdiva Jennifer Lopez. Maar ook o.m. Owen Wilson en Danny Trejo —toen net van de set van ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ (1996) — zweten zich te pletter op het scherm. En eigenlijk is het bedenkelijke Paraguayaanse accent van Jon Voight de echte ster van de film.
De uiteenlopende karakters van de bemanning zorgen voor wrijvingen op de boot, het A-beest van deze B-film voorziet de spanning naast de boot. De hisssterische predator komt met afwisselend praktische en digitale effecten uit het water of een boom tevoorschijn. Gaandeweg blijkt dat de anaconda niet het enige listige wezen is… Misschien is die nare slang nog de ergste niet?
‘Anaconda’ werd grotendeels opgenomen in het Braziliaanse Amazoneregenwoud, mét de Peruaanse regisseur Luis Llosa aan het roer — neef van Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobelprijswinnaar in literatuur. De prijzen die Luis in zijn carrière zou halen waren echter enkel Razzies. Zijn exploitation films werden door recensenten steeds afgemaakt. Desondanks was ‘Anaconda’ een kassucces en volgens ons een cultparel van de bovenste plank.

With Anaconda (1997), we present a creature feature for our 2nd Kuru Cult Night of 2024, a horror subgenre that reached its peak with Jaws (1975) and experienced a remarkable revival in the 1990s with f.e. Deep Blue Sea (1999), Lake Placid (1999) and The Relic (1998). This time, however, no oversized shark, crocodile or cryptid to be seen. A gigantic constrictor snake, anaconda type, is of course the main creature here!
Both characters and plot are ‘strangled’ in Anaconda. A film crew travels along the Amazon on a riverboat in search of a remote indigenous people —until the boat gets stuck… The biggest roles of these unsuspecting people in sultry places went to celebrities from the music biz who then ventured into the movie biz: Ice Cube (from hip-hop group N.W.A.) and pop diva Jennifer Lopez. But also Owen Wilson and Danny Trejo —then fresh off the set of From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)— are profusely sweating on screen. But, perhaps Jon Voight’s questionable Paraguayan accent is the real show stealer here.
The diverse characters of the crew cause friction on the boat, the A-beast of this B-movie provides the tension besides the boat. The hysssteric predator emerges from the water or a tree through practical or digital effects. It gradually turns out that the anaconda is not the only tricky creature… Maybe that nasty snake isn’t the worst after all?
Anaconda was largely shot in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, with Peruvian director Luis Llosa at the helm —nephew of Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel Prize winner in literature. However, the only prizes that Luis would win in his career were Razzies. His exploitation films were always denounced by critics. Nevertheless, Anaconda was a box office hit and - according to us - a cult movie classic.
